Why retire here?

Category General News

The North Coast is an obvious paradise for anyone looking for a quieter lifestyle in beautiful, natural surroundings. But while we know this, Tongaat Hulett Developments’ Retire KZN initiative helps us understand why else the North Coast has become such an in-demand retirement destination.

The North Coast has experienced a significant boost over the last year, with increasing residential development offerings, to more retail and commercial opportunities sprouting up all the time. It would seem then, that if you’re choosing to live in KZN, this area is without a doubt the place to be. This is even more so, though for retirees.

According to research obtained through the Retire KZN campaign, 33 percent of over 55-year olds are already moving to the North Coast. City and urban nodes attract retirees, as they provide a convenient and stimulating diversity that is not found within suburban living. Areas like this exude energy and dynamism, which helps keep retirees ‘young at heart’.

The Retire KZN campaign also reveals that over 60 percent of those registered want to retire along KZN’s North Coast, with special mention of Sibaya Coastal Precinct, Umhlanga and Ballito.

But really, there is no surprise as to why this part of the region is in high demand. Not only does it have the most popular and successful shopping centre in the province, Gateway Theatre of Shopping, as well as the recent opening of The Ballito Junction in Ballito, but it also boasts world-class golf courses, pristine beaches, top-class medical centres and hospitals and the added benefit of having the ideal social, close-knit community lifestyle that retirees relish. Who wouldn’t want to live here?

According to the World Health Organisation, South Africa’s population, aged 60 years or older, is expected to double from 7.7% to 15.4% of the country’s total population over the next 35 years. As a result, we can expect to see many retirement estates coming to the fore on the North Coast, to accommodate the growing need. Two of the most recent are the Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village and Shoreline Sibaya, both of which offer retirees an unsurpassed lifestyle and further enhance the value and popularity of the North Coast.

KwaZulu-Natal encompasses a family lifestyle, and the North Coast is just a small example of the close-knit community and relaxed lifestyle you can encounter. It’s no wonder that KwaZulu-Natal is becoming the ultimate retirement destination.
